Legendary producer/engineer Brian Ahern chose the classic AEA R44 CNEX as solo mic on the Grammy Winning Emmylou single, The Connection recently recorded as the bonus track on "The Very Best of Emmylou Harris: Heartaches & Highways" LP.
Ahern likens this single mic recording to Richard Dodd's 1991 work using an original RCA mic to record. Originally intended for vocal tracks, the AEA R44 CNEX was the only mic set up for the Harris session. Ahern mentioned this to Emmylou before starting, and she wondered whether or not the ribbon mic would be able to perform. Ahern started the session, " and waited for something to sound wrong, but it never did!". Although a sundry of different mics were available for use, the R44 CNEX did the job.
The award winning track was recorded in 2005 at Ahern's Nashville Easter Island Surround facility.
Audio Engineering Associates president, Wes Dooley, has spent 23 years developing and servicing ribbon microphones, and understands why good RCA 44s are still in use daily. Les Paul told Wes that the 44 is his favorite microphone. During the 1990s, RCA 44 collectors made it difficult for even recording studios to acquire one. Reborn as the AEA R44 series of microphones, today's engineer/producers such as Bruce Swedien, John Kurlander, Kevin Bacon and Shawn Murphy are using them around the world. Half the movies scored in Los Angeles now have an AEA R44 somewhere on the scoring stage.
The R44C has the authentic sound, feel, and the look of the RCA 44BX. The R44CX is high output version of the R44C especially designed for scoring and other applications demanding a wide dynamic range with the "classic 44" sound.
